The Magic of "My Happy Life": A Multilingual Reading Adventure
Here at SISOG, we believe in the power of stories to connect us, broaden our horizons, and help us dig deeper into the languages we speak. As part of the Middle Primary years at SISOG, the students (3-4P) dive into the charming Swedish book series, "My Happy Life," exploring its pages in the three languages of our school: Swedish, French, and English!
This beloved series, written by the Swedish author Rose Lagercrantz and beautifully illustrated by Eva Eriksson, follows the adventures of a wonderfully optimistic young girl named Dani. Through Dani's eyes, students explore universal themes of friendship, family, and navigating life's everyday joys and challenges. The books gently touch on a range of emotions, from the delight of new friendships to understanding moments of sadness, all while showcasing Dani's resilient spirit.
This project is not just about reading; it's a unique linguistic adventure. As students read "My Happy Life," they actively compare vocabulary, sentence structure, and themes across languages, deepening their comprehension and appreciation of linguistic diversity. Imagine understanding "sadness," "sorg," and "tristesse" all at once!
Beyond the language, "My Happy Life" offers a wonderful window into Swedish culture. Our students learn about everything from the concept of a "bonus father" to the joy of cream buns, all while picturing themselves walking through the historic grounds of Skansen. Even our English-French students, while not learning Swedish, soak up what makes Sweden so special.
At SISOG, we celebrate daily how books can transcend borders and bring us closer through shared stories, diverse perspectives, and the timeless adventures of characters like Dani.
