At SISOG, We Value the Heart of It All: International Day of Families

Girl and father at school in Geneva on Family Day

Every 15th of May, we at SISOG embrace International Day of Families. We believe it is important to celebrate the very foundation upon which our students flourish: their families.

Established by the United Nations in 1993, this special day serves as a significant reminder of just how vital families are in all their forms. Whether they are the traditional sort or perhaps a little more unconventional, families are the primary building block of our society. It is within these groups that our most impressionable years unfold, and families are often the people who shape us most profoundly.

This year, as always, SISOG marks the International Day of Families with intention and purpose. It’s more than just another school celebration date; it's an opportunity to strengthen that crucial link between home and school, acknowledging the indispensable role family plays in a child's journey through education.

Our theme for this year's celebration sums it up: "My Family, My First Place of Learning." This straightforward but insightful statement highlights the fact that learning begins long before a child enters our classrooms. Families are the original educators, instilling values, sparking curiosity, and laying down the initial framework for understanding the world. Just as school plays a vital role in a child's development and education, so too does the family unit. They are partners in this remarkably important endeavour.

Our aims for International Day of Families at SISOG are clear:

  • Encourage personal expression about family: We want to provide our students with a platform to reflect upon and share what their families mean to them. This helps cultivate a sense of pride and appreciation for their individual backgrounds.

  • Value the diversity of family structures: We recognise and celebrate the rich tapestry of family life. There is not one "right" way to be a family; we embrace the varied experiences and configurations that make up our school community.

  • Create meaningful connections between home and school: By highlighting family ties, we aim to further enhance the partnership between our students' home lives and their learning here at SISOG. We believe that a strong link between these two spheres is absolutely key for a child's holistic development.

So this and every 15th of May, at SISOG, our thoughts are with the entire family. We will take this day as an opportunity to reflect on the love, support, and learning that takes place within our families and to actively seek ways to protect and treasure these vital bonds, starting right within our own homes.
