SISOG Primary School Curriculum: A Swiss Foundation with a Swedish Touch

The SISOG primary school curriculum offers a blend of innovative educational philosophy of Sweden with local Swiss curriculum requirements. At the heart of our program are the five core values: Empathy, Love of Learning, Commitment, Equality, and Community. We strive to create a learning environment that fosters curiosity, independence, and a lifelong love of learning.

A Seamless Transition from Preschool

Students transition smoothly from SISOG preschool to primary school. The SISOG approach ensures that the principles of play-based learning, which are central to preschool education, are carried over into the primary years. This helps provide a consistent and reassuring environment for your child as they embark on their primary school journey.

To support this transition, we have developed an adaptation program that includes several sessions designed to help children develop independence, adapt to new routines, connect with new teachers and classmates and foster collaboration.

The Swedish Approach: Holistic Development

The SISOG curriculum is heavily influenced by the Swedish educational approach, which emphasizes the holistic development of the child. We focus not only on academic learning but also on social, emotional, and physical growth. The Swedish approach is based on the fundamental principle of respecting the individuality of each child. Through innovative teaching methods, it encourages students' natural curiosity, fostering their autonomy, creativity, and love of learning.

Key elements of the Swedish approach include:

  • Child-centered learning: We prioritize the individual needs, interests, and abilities of each student, fostering independence and responsibility.

  • Respect for individuality: We believe in respecting the individuality of each child. Each child is encouraged to develop at their own pace in a safe and caring environment.

  • Collaboration and group activities: We encourage teamwork and cooperation rather than competition.

  • Outdoor and playful learning: We believe in the importance of connecting with nature and integrating outdoor experiences into the curriculum. We emphasize the playful aspect of learning, using games and creative activities to stimulate interest and engagement.

  • Learning autonomy: From an early age, children are encouraged to make decisions and take initiatives, learn to solve problem situations, and take action independently. This approach helps build each child's personality by forging real confidence in themselves and their abilities.

  • Student voice: The student's voice is of paramount importance. Students are encouraged to express themselves, ask questions, and develop their capacity to reflect on the world around them.

  • Lifelong learning: Our goal is to prepare students for both academic success and active participation in society.

What Does Primary School Look Like at SISOG?
A Look at Our Philosophy and Daily Activities

  • Small, multi-age classes: We offer small, multi-age classes, placing pedagogical differentiation and individualized approaches at the heart of our practices to meet the needs of each student and allow them to develop at their own pace. Multi-age classes offer numerous advantages, including personalized learning, peer learning, and social skills development. Each child develops their inner student, free from any competitive spirit. Free from any pressure, they can progress at their own pace, taking a little more time to consolidate certain learning when necessary or, conversely, going further in their learning if they feel ready.

  • Coordinated teaching across languages: We ensure a cohesive learning experience by fostering collaboration among language teachers.

  • Project-based learning: We engage students through real-world scenarios, encourage active participation, and promote cross-disciplinary learning.

  • Focus on values and citizenship: We integrate values-based education, teaching democratic principles, equality, and environmental responsibility.

  • Differentiated instruction: We cater to diverse learning needs and abilities, ensuring that every student can progress at their own pace.

  • Supportive environment: We create a supportive environment where students feel valued, listened to, and respected.

  • Emphasis on equality: Equality among students is a cornerstone of our approach. We foster an inclusive environment, encourage collaboration, and promote the absence of excessive competition.

  • Integration of technology: We participate in the integration of new technologies by developing responsible and informed digital citizens. Starting in 5P students develop their digital literacy to prepare them for an increasingly technological modern society.

  • Connection with nature: We believe in the importance of the connection between education and nature. Exploring the surrounding nature and spending time outdoors are part of daily life, promoting outdoor activities for health and well-being.

We believe that our unique blend of Swiss and Swedish educational philosophies provides a rich and rewarding learning experience for our students.
