Growing Together: Inter-generational Learning at Swedish International School of Geneva
At Swedish International School of Geneva, we believe that education is a journey where care, development, and learning form a whole. This week, our Upper Primary students put these values into practice during a visit to our preschool groups.
Preparation and Purpose
Before the meeting, the older students took a trip to the Meyrin library. Their mission was to select books and "kamishibaïs" specifically adapted for the younger children. This process is a key part of our curriculum, as it encourages students to develop their language skills and find different ways to communicate. By preparing these interactive readings, the Upper Primary students strengthened their own literacy, oral performance, and self-esteem.
A Collaborative Environment
The morning included stories, songs, and various artistic forms of expression. These moments are an essential part of our social community. As our curriculum highlights, "Teaching should be based on children learning together and from each other, and also on the interaction between adults and children".
Developing Responsibility and Empathy
Through these encounters, our older students develop a sense of responsibility and empathy, which are fundamental values in our school. They learn to see things from the perspective of others and to act as role models for the younger members of our community. This aligns with our core mission: "Our aim is to provide the support and guidance necessary for all students and staff to flourish".
For the preschool children, these interactions provide a secure yet challenging environment where they can discover new ideas and create meaningful links with the older pupils.
The SISOG Spirit
These sessions reflect the "red thread" of the Swedish pedagogical approach that runs through Swedish International School of Geneva. We strive to foster a vibrant community where every individual is an asset to the group, and where everyone has the opportunity to flourish.
