Following the ‘Red Thread’ of Inclusive Education: Highlights from Our Final Coffee Morning
We recently wrapped up our successful series of four coffee morning sessions at SISOG, and our hearts are incredibly full. On our final morning, the HAVET room was filled with the low hum of warm conversations as current families sat shoulder-to-shoulder with prospective parents, exploring what makes our learning community feel like home.
We were overjoyed to welcome three new families and their children into our fold for this session. Following a beautiful morning of shared stories and connection over coffee, Pernilla Lauritis, our Admissions Coordinator, led our visiting families on a guided walk through the school, not just to show them our facilities, but to let them see and feel our values in active motion.
The beating heart of this final morning was an inspiring presentation by our SEN Coordinator, Marcia Norwell: How Equality, Empathy, and Community Build a Positive Learning Environment.
Understanding the ‘Red Thread’
Marcia Norwell, SISOG’s SEN Coordinator
At the Swedish International School of Geneva, everything we do is guided by a central concept from Swedish pedagogy: the röda tråden, or the "red thread." To us, this red thread isn't just a conceptual framework; it is the invisible safety net and cohesive journey that runs seamlessly through a child's entire day. It connects their experiences from that very first warm morning greeting at drop-off, through their classroom discoveries, out onto the play areas, and all the way to afternoon pick-up. It ensures that a child's day never feels fragmented, but rather like one continuous, secure environment where they can truly belong.
Our curriculum takes a deeply holistic approach, looking well beyond traditional academics to nurture the social, emotional, and cognitive well-being of every single student in our care. At our school, inclusion is the ultimate red thread, and it is firmly supported by three core strands:
Equality: We believe every single individual is born with inherent, equal value. Everyone deserves the exact same level of respect, dignity, and space to be heard.
Empathy: We encourage children to find echoes of others within themselves. By learning to step into someone else’s shoes, they build authentic, deep connections rooted in kindness.
Community: We operate as a collective organized for the good of the whole. We rely on trust, open hearts, and solidarity to maintain a unified environment where no child ever feels left standing on the outside.
Fair Isn't Always Equal: Equality vs. Equity
One of the most moving discussions during the coffee morning centered on how we truly define fairness in a diverse, vibrant educational setting. True fairness never means giving every child the exact same thing. Rather, it means looking closely at every single student, seeing them for who they are, and ensuring they receive precisely what they need to thrive and feel secure on their unique journey.
While one child might find confidence through visual aids, another might need quiet, cozy corners to recharge, and a third might benefit from regular, joyful movement breaks to focus. By honoring and welcoming these distinct differences, we put real equality into practice.
This principle connects directly to the foundational values of the Swedish National Curriculum, which beautifully dictates that education must be adapted to each child's unique needs and circumstances. It reminds us that an equivalent education does not mean an identical education. We intentionally direct our resources to ensure that every single child, regardless of their starting point, has the environment they need to flourish.
Weaving the Thread into Daily Routines
Marcia shared several lived examples of how we breathe life into these values every day. At the heart of our approach is a simple but powerful mindset: designing environments that are good for everyone, and bad for no one. By planning with every child's needs in mind from the very beginning, we ensure our daily structures always serve the collective emotional and social well-being of our entire community:
Universal Design and Predictability
We use tools like visual timetables to help students independently navigate the rhythm of their day. When a child knows exactly what to expect next, routine-related anxiety melts away, replaced by a deep sense of security. In this safe, predictable environment, a child's natural capacity to learn, grow, and thrive can truly flourish.
Active Inclusion and Generation PEP
Our red thread doesn't stop at the classroom door; it reaches right out onto the playground. As a proud Generation PEP certified school, we know that active bodies lead to happy minds. We sprinkle purposeful movement breaks throughout the morning to keep spirits high and bodies energized.
During recess, our educators are actively out on the yard, thoughtfully facilitating play to guarantee that every single child feels invited, included, and valued from the very first moment. By intentionally organizing inclusive group games and paired walks, our teachers ensure that every child is fully integrated into the social fabric of the school, leaving no room for isolation.
The Pedagogical Lunch
Community is built around the table. During mealtimes, teachers dine family-style alongside the children right in the classroom, modeling healthy habits and sharing genuine, unhurried conversations. Every child takes pride in a weekly community responsibility, whether it’s setting the tables, serving friends, or tidying up.
We begin each meal with a shared moment of mindful silence to ground ourselves, before opening the floor to warm, democratic lunchtime storytelling. To foster a truly inclusive environment, teachers thoughtfully design the seating arrangements, giving every child a wonderful opportunity to connect with different peers, spark new friendships, and feel a deep sense of belonging.
Extending the Thread to Your Home
Our coffee morning concluded with an intimate, interactive moment where parents paired up to share childhood memories of times they felt truly understood, seen, or included. It was a beautiful, tear-tinged reminder of the lifelong, transformative power of empathy.
To help carry this red thread beyond our school walls, Marcia offered a few gentle strategies families can embrace at home:
Read Diverse Stories: Fill your bookshelves with tales featuring characters with a beautiful, wide range of abilities, backgrounds, and family dynamics.
Model Vulnerability: Share your own messy emotions openly. Saying, "I felt a bit frustrated today when..." teaches children that it is safe to feel, safe to stumble, and safe to express their true selves.
Encourage Heart-Centered Curiosity: If your child notices a difference in someone else, lean into it. Answer their questions factually, warmly, and simply, rather than shushing them in embarrassment.
Celebrate Uniqueness: Remind your child often that different is never less. Different is just beautifully different.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all the wonderful families who brought their warmth, insights, and open hearts to our coffee mornings this term. We are so deeply proud of our collaborative, caring community, and we cannot wait to welcome our new families into the fold with open arms.
