How We Celebrate Birthdays at SISOG: Building Community, Inclusivity, and Joy

Searching for the right international school in Geneva often comes down to finding a place where your child feels seen, valued, and genuinely happy. At the Swedish International School of Geneva (SISOG), we believe that education extends far beyond academics—it encompasses the holistic development of every child aged 1–12.

One of the most cherished expressions of our school culture is how we celebrate birthdays. Rather than isolated classroom treats, we turn birthdays into a vibrant, monthly whole-school tradition grounded in our core values of Equality, Empathy, and Community.

A Trilingual Tradition on the Rugby Pitch

Once a month, our school community gathers together outdoors on the rugby pitch. Children aged 3 and up—from our early learners through primary school—come together under the open sky to honor all classmates celebrating a birthday that month.

Embracing our vibrant trilingual spirit, the entire school fills the air with music, singing "Happy Birthday" in all three school languages: Swedish, English, and French. The celebration goes beyond song; our students and staff express their joy through theatre, performance, and dance, creating a lively, creative space where every child gets their moment to shine.

(For our youngest learners aged 1 to 2, we maintain a calm, nurturing routine tailored to their developmental needs in their dedicated space or outdoors, preparing them to join our big pitch gatherings when they are ready!)

Mindful Policies That Put Children First

In alignment with the Swedish Pedagogical Approach and our focus on child health, well-being, and active living (supported by initiatives like Generation Pep), we maintain simple, thoughtful guidelines surrounding celebrations:

  • Nutritious & Inclusive Focus (No Outside Food): To safeguard children with allergies and promote balanced lifestyles, we kindly ask parents not to send food into school to be shared. Our focus remains entirely on shared experiences, outdoor joy, and creative expression.

  • Thoughtful Party Invitations: We strive to ensure every child feels included and valued. If you plan a private birthday party outside of school, we ask that invitations be distributed outside of school hours—unless the entire class is invited. If the whole class is joining the fun, our teachers are more than happy to assist with distribution in the classroom!

Why Small Traditions Matter in International Education

In a dynamic city like Geneva, international families seek stability, warmth, and a strong sense of belonging. As outlined in our SISOG Strategic Plan:

"Our vision is together we nurture happy, creative and independent children ready to build their future in an interconnected world... We encourage all children to discover their own uniqueness as individuals and thereby be able to participate in the life of society."

By transforming individual birthdays into a unified, outdoor, trilingual celebration, we teach our students to applaud one another, embrace cultural diversity, and feel part of one supportive family.
